I gave a keynote speech at the annual accumulating of bilingual colleges in the Netherlands. Toxic vs. valuable
While giving my speech, I highlighted how bilingual schooling in the Netherlands translates as ‘tweeting onderwijs’, however how in Denmark, it’s far a non-starter translating bilingual education in a similar style as ‘tosproget uddannelse’ – due to the toxicity of the phrase ‘tosproget’ in Danish tradition.

When I said this, the room of a couple of hundred Dutch training leaders went silent in disbelief. At first, the silence surprised me as I have grown so conversant in the terrible connotations surrounding this phrase in Denmark. However, upon realizing I had taken a one-hour flight and entered a terrain wherein bilingual (tosproget) education is seen as a present and key tenant of the academic sector, the absurdity also caught me.

Indisputably an asset
Over 40 years of research has documented that bilingual training is a gift: from improving reminiscence feature and intercultural skills to heightening meta-linguistic awareness.

Systematic reviews of bilingual training worldwide have proven that students obtain equal skillability in analyzing and writing as students in monolingual (Danish or English most effective) programs – at the same time as growing the same appreciation and know-how of the host subculture as students in monolingual programs.
