The New Kid on the Block: Introducing MNLU Mumbai

My name is Natasha Maheshwari, and I am a 3rd-yr scholar at Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai. I’m writing this article on behalf of the entire MNLU Parivaar and the trouble that my tightly-knit circle of relatives of 220 – ordinary college students feel very strongly about.

Introducing MNLU Mumbai

In the weeks leading up to the CLAT result announcement, CLAT pundits examine the paper, expect the expected cut-offs, and dissect the achievements and opportunities at every university. And while some of their guesstimates become authentic, the maximum of them is incorrect.

My university may be very new – it will be five years antique in October. Being an upcoming and nascent University, it’s been the concern of much debate and the victim of many hypotheses. Mumbai is the country’s monetary capital and the biggest town, but…and sure, right here comes the huge BUT – Is the locational benefit sufficient? Why does a regulation aspirant select MNLU Mumbai over the older ones and another extra set-up NLUs and regulation faculties? What are the centers provided by and opportunities to be had at MNLU? All these question marks. Now, I’ve observed that the maximum of these questions is often replied to by unreliable resources who recognize little to nothing approximately us. Hence, fuelling baseless rumors and useless hypotheses main to apprehensions in the mind of a potential scholar.

In this text, let me try and dispel a number of those notions about my university, banish your doubts, and reaffirm your religion in us.

Campus – The first query that the maximum folks at MNLU Mumbai are asked is to set up our campus. So, we were based out of the TISS Campus in Chembur for the primary years of functioning, and our hostel changed into CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai. However, our university campus and hostel shifted to 2 MTNL homes in Powai after that. Our hostel is opposite the university campus, and both are located squarely within the center of Hiranandani Gardens. Now some of you would possibly pass on to ask – “Do you need a right campus of your own, or is this MTNL association operating out?” There’s nothing like your own campus – your very own basketball court, your health club, your very own mess, and your area. However, Powai isn’t always so horrific. It’s miles an awful lot more than “now not so horrific.” In Powai, we have first-rate stores and eating places placed at taking walks distance; everything is open until past due, and food and drugs are brought 24*7. The nearest railway station is 10 minutes away, and we have summated the entirety we need is nearby.

However, this association is the simplest transient. The MTNL homes had been leased using our college, and the hire exists for five years. A plot of land has been allotted to MNLU Mumbai in Goregaon, and the construction of our permanent campus will start shortly.

Competitions – On the eve of its 5th Foundation Day, MNLU Mumbai has done so much, each at the national and global level. In several instances over, our students have proven that they have what it takes to pop out on the pinnacle within the most aggressive competitions in India and on the International stage. Our university has won the NLS Trilegal International Moot 2019, won the NLS Mediation Competition in 2018 after which qualified to the ICC Paris Mediation Competition, received the NLS Negotiation Competition in 2018 and certified to the International Negotiation Competition Cardiff, been a semi-finalist at the NLS Client Counselling Competition 2019, won Best Speaker (Special Mention) at the Manfred Lachs Asia Pacific Moot Court Competition, come 2nd inside the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition 2018 and certified to the South Asian rounds in Iran and then the Asia Pacific rounds in Hong Kong, been one of the 6 teams to qualify to the worldwide rounds of the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot 2018-19 and became ranked 5th best within the world, been shortlisted as one of the eleven mediators from the world over for the CDRC Vienna Mediation Competition 2018 after which became a semi-finalist at the arena rounds, been one of the 22 teams to be shortlisted for the CDRC Vienna Negotiation Competition 2019, won Best Negotiation Team on the HSF – NLU Delhi Negotiation Competition 2018, received the VIPS Dispute Resolution and Client Counselling Competitions 2018.

Besides moot and ADR competitions, our college students have received Best Speaker and won/reached the finals and semi-finals of various prestigious debating competitions. Additionally, we’ve performed tremendously well at intercollegiate carrying occasions triumphing in two golds, two bronzes, and one silver medal at Invicta’19 and triumphing in different accolades in Vaayu’19, Virudhaka’15, and ’16.

We have additionally had coaches for moots and ADR competitions. For example, AZB & Partners was our teaching for the crew representing the University in the ICC Paris Mediation Competition.

Our students have also published in diverse journals and offered at countrywide and worldwide meetings.

Internships and Placements – Internships are among the most important matters our college mandates us to perform. We have an Internship Cell that helps us obtain internships. Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, J Sagar & Associates, and Khaitan are among the fantastic regulation firms that reserve slots for our college students throughout the internship breaks. Our college students are also furnished with clerkships underneath the judges of the Bombay High Court.

My friends have interned with some of the fine law companies like AZB & Partners, Luthra, and Luthra, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co., Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, ALMT Legal, Khaitan & Co., J Sagar & Associates, Trilegal S & R Associates, Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan and plenty of more.

They have also worked beneath senior counsels at the Supreme Court and High Courts like Mr. Harish Salve, Indira Jaising, Prashant Bhushan, Janak Dwarkadas, Kapil Sibal, Siddharth Luthra, and Salman Khurshid, to call a few.

Besides legal professionals and regulation companies, college students have pursued clerkships; labored within residence counsels, government departments, NGOs, think tanks, and journals.

Our first batch might be sitting for placements this yr. Our Placement Cell has been formed and is within the procedure of securing orders for our college students.
